State of the World discussions are conducted in accordance with the best ethical norms, and nobody feels unsafe..
CB and SOW have something in common: chess players work on war games, while world observers describe real wars. Unlike the Mahjong enthusiasts who fill Stonebridge Club with cheerful chorus, chess players sit silently at chess boards. But their brains and, sometimes their mouths, shout battle cries. Pawns, bishops, knights and queens die for their countries, kings surrender, but chess players go home unscathed. Just like in real life.
During the past two years State Of the World produced four public discussions with power point presentations and diverse views:
1. The future of Palestine: Harry Shamir vs. Anatol Zukerman, moderated by George Karam. Harry defended Israel’s policy, Anatol criticized it.
2. The future of Ukraine: Tom Durkin vs. Anatol Zukerman, moderated by Rick Frazier. Tom predicted Russia’s occupation of the entire Ukraine, Anatol professed a partition of Ukraine between Putin and Trump.
3. The world in turmoil: John Depuy vs. Anatol Zukerman, moderated by Rick Frazier. John admired the US and the world’s progress, Anatol worried about existing problems.
4. The war with Iran: John Depuy vs. Anatol Zukerman, moderated by Joseph Speredolozzi. John supported the bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities, Anatol opposed it.
The discussions were conducted in accordance with the best ethical norms, and nobody felt unsafe. The next topic to be scheduled is ‘Immigration in the United States’. Come and help us create the US foreign policy! – Anatol Zukerman, State of the World and Chess Club
